Mitutoyo 7220A is a depth gauge with a dial indicator designed for accurate depth measurements in machine shops, production, and quality control. The gauge is based on a rectangular base with a reference surface that is hardened, precision ground, and micro-lapped. This means that the measurement is always taken from a very flat and reliable reference surface, improving measurement repeatability, for example, when measuring the depth of grooves, bores, and steps.

The depth gauge has a measuring range of 0–200 millimetres and a dial division accuracy of 0.01 millimetre, allowing even small changes in depth to be read clearly. The dial indicator has a stroke length of 10 millimetres and a system accuracy of ±15 micrometres, with a base flatness of 5 micrometres. The contact tip is a spherical measuring tip with a radius of 1.5 millimetres and is made of carbide tip, making it suitable for continuous use.

Five extension rods in lengths of 10, 20, 30, 30, and 100 millimetres are included to adapt the measuring range to different applications. The depth gauge is supplied in a box together with a spindle lifting lever, a carbide ball tip, and a Mitutoyo 2902AB dial indicator. The total weight of the instrument is approximately 380 grams, making it stable yet lightweight for easy handling and movement between workstations.
