The outer and inner raceways of tapered roller bearings and the rollers are conical. The theoretical extensions of the conical surfaces taper towards a point on the bearing's geometric axis. Optimum rolling conditions are achieved with this cone shape. The bearings are therefore particularly suitable for carrying combined loads (radial and axial loads). The axial bearing capacity is mainly determined by the contact angle, which corresponds to the angle of the outer ring raceway. The greater this angle, the greater the axial load capacity. Tapered ball bearings are usually not self-retaining, i.e. the inner ring and roller bearing form a separate entity that can be installed separately without the outer ring.
Tapered roller bearings are commonly used in both metric and inch dimensions. The cage of tapered roller bearings is normally made of steel, but polyamide and brass cages are also available. Tapered roller bearings are also produced as two and four row models.
