Single acting cylinders are commonly used in applications where motion is required in only one direction and the return occurs with the aid of an external force. These cylinders are utilized in devices such as lifting equipment, presses, and control systems powered by pneumatic or hydraulic systems.

In spring-return cylinders, the return force is generated by a spring. When the fluid from the pressure hose pushes the piston outward, the cylinder expands, and when the pressure is released, the spring returns the piston to its original position.

In gravity-return cylinders, the return force is produced by gravity. In this case, the cylinder can move downward under the influence of gravity and returns upward either by a spring or a counterweight.
